Scotland’s school kids to champion Scotland’s Railway

Scotland’s Railway has launched a national competition for every school in the country – asking them to help dream up new ways of encouraging more people and businesses on to rail.

All 5,052 schools in Scotland have been invited to participate in the competition to create a one-minute advert, or design a large poster, to promote the benefits of rail travel.

Four schools – two primary and two secondary – will each win £2,500 to spend on new tech for their school.

The winning entries will be used to promote rail in the lead up to COP26 in Glasgow later this year, with their work being displayed in stations across Scotland as well as used on social media.

The winners will also be asked to input to the railway’s anti-trespass campaigns for 2022, as children and young people are a key focus for this vital safety messaging.

Rail is already the greenest form of public transport and has set a target of decarbonising passenger journeys in Scotland by 2035.

The railway plays a key role in moving people and freight around Scotland and can help to further reduce the number of private cars and commercial vehicles on our roads in the years ahead.

Alex Hynes, managing director of Scotland’s Railway, said: “The railway plays an important part in making Scotland greener.

“We want our young people to help us showcase what Scotland’s Railway is great at doing – reducing our impact on the environment by getting more people, and goods, out of their vehicles.

“We’re decarbonising Scotland’s Railway – investing in more electrification and new greener trains – and we hope this competition will help highlight the positive contribution we make to Scotland’s communities, economy and environment.”
