Over Christmas, Scotland’s Railway is open for business and working hard to keep passengers and freight moving. At the same time, we are delivering essential upgrades across our network.

Scotland’s Railway delivers £17m in upgrades this Christmas

Passengers, and freight customers, will benefit from more than £17m of investment in Scotland’s Railway over this Christmas and New Year.

Engineers will be relaying track, renewing junctions and refurbishing structures in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Lanarkshire from Christmas Eve until early January.

Possible Disruptions

  • Check before your travel

    We are carrying out work to the West Coast Mainline at both Uddingston and Carstairs junctions, which will affect ScotRail and cross-border services.

    Over an eight-day period of continuous working, passenger services via Uddingston station will be affected, with bus replacements available at several stations.

  • Affected services from 25 December to 2 January

    Glasgow Central – Motherwell/Lanark

    Glasgow Central – Edinburgh via Carstairs

    Glasgow Central – Edinburgh via Shotts

    Track and overhead line work at Carstairs junction, from Friday 31 December to Sunday 2 January, affects TransPennine Express services.

The work is part of a five-year, £4bn investment and vital to the long-term future of Scotland’s Railway, helping to make our infrastructure more resilient and more reliable for our passengers and freight customers.

Work will involve renewing Uddingston Junction and installing foundations for new overhead powerlines around Carstairs Junction.
