East Haven culvert renewal
East Haven culvert renewal
A programme of work to replace a culvert (a pipe that lets water flow underneath the railway embankment) under the East Coast Main Line between Carnoustie and Arbroath.
This work is to replace a culvert (a pipe that lets water flow underneath the railway embankment) under the East Coast Main Line in the village of East Haven. The new culvert will be larger and more able to contain the flow of water, which will prevent flooding under the railway bridge and support the railway embankment.

Why?
The culvert under the railway has failed and cannot cope with the amount of water flowing through it. Temporary pumps are in place until the new culvert is installed.
What will change?
A machine will be used to drill through the embankment and insert a new, larger concrete pipe for the water to flow through.
This has to be done when trains are not running, so some of the work will take place overnight and at weekends.
There will be no change to how the area around the railway looks, as the culvert will be underground.
