Old Kilpatrick: Bridge replacement at A814 Dumbarton Road

Network Rail will demolish and replace the bridge over the railway on A814 Dumbarton Road in Old Kilpatrick from Saturday 17 July until Friday 10 December 2021.

Network Rail will begin work to demolish and replace the bridge over the railway on Dumbarton Road in Old Kilpatrick from Saturday 17 July until Friday 10 December 2021.

The new bridge will strengthen and safeguard the route for the long-term after the deterioration of the old bridge left it unsuitable for the weight and volume of traffic which passes over it daily.

As part of the works, the £1m temporary bailey bridge, which was put in place last year to allow traffic to continue using the route, will also be removed.

Due to the nature of the works, the bridge needs to close to all vehicular traffic from 2 August to 26 November this year to allow the project to be completed safely and efficiently.

Pedestrians will be able to continue using the bridge until 23 August, when it will close completely for demolition and follow-up works, before re-opening on 26 November.

Why?

The existing structure has deteriorated and is no longer fit to hold the weight and volume of traffic which crosses the bridge on a daily basis.

Although we installed a temporary bailey bridge to allow traffic to continue using the route last year, a new permanent bridge needs to be installed, and is now ready.

What will change?

The bailey bridge, which has sat over the existing bridge will be removed and existing the bridge will be demolished.

We will then installed a new permanent bridge, which will strengthen and safeguard the route for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians for the long-term.
