CP7 tree and vegetation management work

CP7 tree and vegetation management work

Network Rail has begun a five-year programme of lineside tree and vegetation management covering some of Scotland’s key rail corridors.

The initial focus will be on delivering on two key routes covering 250 kilometres of lineside environment.

Faqs

We understand that you will have many questions about this work and we will answer them below. The FAQs section of the site will evolve and develop in tandem with the project.

More information about tree and vegetation management more generally can be found on our dedicated webpage: https://scotlandsrailway.com/m...

  • Where and when will you be working?

The first phase of work will be delivered between April 2024 and March 2025.

This will focus on the Edinburgh – Glasgow (via Falkirk High) line and Edinburgh Waverley – Tweedbank line.

  • Could works be carried out during the day instead of at night?

Our preference would be to undertake tree and vegetation management works during the day and will only proceed at night when there is no other alternative. We try to carry out our works at the least disruptive time possible and as there is a requirement for chainsaws and tree-climbing, daylight hours are always preferable from a safety perspective.

  • How far back will the trees and vegetation be cut?

We routinely clear trees and vegetation from the area immediately next to the track.

Teams will be working both day and night to clear a six-metre strip on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Main Line, and a three-metre strip on the Scottish Borders Rail Link, from the outside rail within the boundary of all woody material.

Other trees within falling distance of the railway will be selectively felled or cut-back. Any heritage, landscape or specimen trees will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be retained where it is safe to do so.

  • What about the ecological impacts of the work?

Ahead of the work, ecological surveys will be carried out to identify any constraints relating to nesting birds, protected species and sensitive habitats/designated sites. The works will have ongoing support from our ecologists to safeguard the species living within our lineside and to mitigate the works appropriately.

We will look to minimise the impact on the environment by looking for options to compensate or incorporate biodiversity enhancement measures where possible. This will include the installation of bat and bird boxes and habitat piles where appropriate.

  • How can I find out more about the work?

Those living closest to the line will be advised about the work by letter with a FAQs section which anticipates and responds to many of the concerns people have raised when we have carried carry out this type of work in other areas.
