Project Updates
-
Initial works
The refreshed retail layout will see more choice for customers. In the short term this will mean the closure of Beer House and Upper Crust, with Burger King temporarily closed before it moves to another unit in the station.

Phase 1
Phase one of three will see the layout and occupation of several existing retail units changing on the concourse. It will involve relocating tenants, creating new retail units, making some units larger and refurbishing office accommodation within the station.
Phase 1 includes:
- Strip out of three former retail units which is scheduled for completion in advance of the Christmas break.
- Removal of signage, illuminated advertising boards, telephone booths, photo booths at the Caledonian Chambers concourse facade.
- Concourse level layout reconfiguration and refurbishment at Caledonian Chambers. This will consist of new step free access and station reception, new multi-faith room, improved accessibility and additional retail space at concourse level.
- Refurbishment of office accommodation within Caledonian Chambers to improve the overall quality, use and experience.
The improvement works at Caledonian Chambers mean that we need to erect scaffolding on the outside of the building between 81 and 101 Union Street in Glasgow from January until the end of September 2024. Access to shops will continue as normal and pedestrians will be unaffected. Pedestrian movements will be maintained under both scaffolding towers, which will consist of a fully boarded / protected tunnel on pavement, lighting, and appropriate signage.
While the scaffolding is in place, a section of taxi parking bays between the entrance to the station, and the vehicle entrance to the basement ramp, will be temporarily closed.
Why?
The project benefits passengers by:
- Reconfiguring the layout and occupation of a number of existing retail units on the station concourse.
- Improving and increasing the retail and commercial offering providing station users with a wider choice of retail within the station.
- Create a new multi-faith room in the customer lounge on the unpaid side of the ticket gates
- Create and enhance access from the Station to Caledonian Chambers by improving overall accessibility and linkage.
- Refurbishment of space within Caledonian Chambers to improve the overall quality, use and experience.
- Step free station reception will be created on the concourse level of Caledonian Chambers
