Uddingston Access for All

Uddingston Access for All

A project to improve accessibility at Uddingston station.

Faqs

We understand that you will have many questions about the Uddingston Access for All project and we have tried to answer them below.

If the answer to your query is not below, please use our contact form to share your question with the project team and they will come back to you.

  • Why is the project being delivered?

The purpose of this project is to introduce, within the Network Rail controlled infrastructure, an unobstructed “accessible route” from at least one station entrance and all drop-off points associated with that entrance as well as to each platform and between platforms served by passenger trains.

At Uddingston station, this project aims to provide step-free access to platforms 1 and 2 by installing a new compliant footbridge and lift system as part an of ongoing investment to improve accessibility in Scotland’s railway stations.

  • What will change?

The new footbridge will be accessed by a staircase and lift shaft at each end, making it easier for people with impaired mobility or those travelling with luggage, children, or bicycles to access the platforms.

It will be an uncovered footbridge made of steel and is to be located approximately 25m to the west of the existing footbridge, which will be removed after the new one is installed.

  • Who is funding the project?

The work is being funded through the Access for All (AfA) programme as part of the ongoing investment in Scotland’s Railway.

The Access for All programme is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) but Transport Scotland (TS) is responsible for managing this fund for Scotland.

Stations are selected by TS and delivered in partnership with Network Rail who is responsible for the physical works.

Most recently, improvements have been made at Croy and Johnstone stations and work is underway at Port Glasgow.

  • When are the works starting?

Work is planned to start in November 2023.

  • How long will the works be?

The project is expected to be completed in approximately 8 months.

  • Will there be a disruption to services?

Services will continue to run as normal throughout the works.

  • Will any station amenities be affected?

The bike shelter on the Platform 1 side will be temporarily moved to beside the station building, to ensure this remains operational during the project.

Station platforms will have hoarding installed throughout the project to ensure the works are contained from pedestrians and passing trains.

  • Will any of the access points to the station be closed?

Access points to the station on both sides will remain open as normal.

  • Will construction work be noisy?

Unfortunately, given the nature of the work, some noise is unavoidable during the construction phase. We will do what we can to minimise disturbance for station users and the surrounding community.

  • Where will the compound be located?

The compound will be located in the back corner of the carpark on the platform 2 side.

  • Will there be any road closures during the works?

The only planned work for closing the car park will be for the main steel structure installation, which will happen over a weekend. The car park will be closed from a Wednesday night through to the following Sunday night, and be opened again for the Monday parking. This is critical to us having adequate space to install the large-scale steel elements for the bridge. We envisage this phase of the work in early March but will provide more information nearer the time.

We are also in discussions with SPEN about getting a new power supply to the station for the new lifts, which may require a lane closure but more information will be given when the details are finalised.

We will try and minimise the impact as much as possible.

  • Will parking be impacted?

Parking will be impacted during the construction phase as we need adequate space to be able to carry out the complex works. We will be taking a small amount of parking on the platform 1 side (station building side) and then a row of bays along platform 2 side of the station to accommodate the works.

The disabled bays beside the station will be temporarily relocated during the works and we will implement a one-way traffic system at the station during this time, to ensure the flow of traffic is controlled. The signage will indicate the direction of travel for road users.

  • Has the design been agreed?

Network Rail submitted an application for prior approval for the work to South Lanarkshire Council.

  • Any other information

The footpath at the West of the station, at the bottom of the platform 2 car park will remain open during the works.

However, it will be diverted around our site compound. Fencing and signage will be in place to ensure users can follow the new route.

Also, the bike shelter on the Platform 1 side will be temporarily moved beside the station building, to ensure this remains operational during the project.
