Balgray station
Balgray station
We're building a new railway station at Balgray, on the line between Glasgow Central and Neilston.
The station will have a car park, bus stop and active travel links, and will provide rail connections to Glasgow for several new housing developments in the area and the existing Barrhead community, as well as providing direct access to Dams to Darnley Country Park and Balgray reservoir.
Faqs
Please see below for frequently asked questions
-
Why will the station be called Balgray?
The new station located between Patterton and Neilston will be called Balgray as it is near Balgray reservoir and located just off Balgraystone Road.
The name is an old Scottish place name from either Bal (settlement) or Balg (bulge or bag shaped body of water.)
-
When will construction begin?
Construction of the new station will begin in July 2025.
-
Will there be an opportunity to see what's happening at the site and be kept up to date with the construction timeline?
We will hold regular public engagement events throughout the development of the station, particularly for those living closest to the proposed station site, as well as working with local schools and community groups.
The web page on Scotland’s Railway project hub will be kept updated on all the latest developments, as well as information provided on social media and in local press.
-
Will all trains call at the station? How many trains a day will there be?
The timetables will not be confirmed until later, but it is likely that most trains between Glasgow and Neilston will call at the station. Stations between Glasgow and Neilston are usually served by two trains per hour, with more frequent trains at peak times.
-
Will the station have lifts?
There will be a footbridge with lifts to provide step-free access between the platforms. There will be a ramp to access platform 2 (the reservoir side) and step-free access to platform 1 from the car park.
-
Will the work be noisy?
There will be some noise, yes. From July 2025 there will be both day and night shifts, including some weekend working, and given the nature of the machinery/plant in use, there will be some noise and disruption during construction.
However, we will do whatever we can to mitigate noise from plant and machinery and will locate our equipment at the furthest safe point from adjacent housing wherever possible to deliver the work. Our contractors are experienced in delivering this type of work and are briefed daily to remind them of their responsibilities while working in communities, particularly at night.
Those living within 200m of the work site will be kept informed by letter and/or email of the type of work being carried out, especially any prolonged overnight work or noise.
-
How many car parking spaces will there be?
There will be 80 car parking spaces, including disabled parking spaces and charging points for electric vehicles. Those travelling to the station will be encouraged to use sustainable transport and active travel options as much as possible.
-
What other facilities will there be at the station?
There will be an enclosed waiting shelter and help points on each platform, and secure cycle storage located on Platform 1.
