Balgray station

Balgray station

Plans are being developed for a new railway station at Balgray, to the south of Barrhead, on the railway line between Glasgow and Neilston.

The station will have a car park, bus turning circle and active travel links, and will provide rail connections for several new housing developments in the area as well as providing direct access to Dams to Darnley Country Park and Balgray reservoir.

Faqs

Please see below for frequently asked questions

  • When will the work begin?

Preparatory work will begin from October 2023 to investigate the ground conditions at the proposed site, prepare the design of the station, and support East Renfrewshire Council to develop their final business case. Construction timescales will be subject to a funding decision by Glasgow City Deal Board.

  • What will the station be called?

The new station located between Patterton and Neilston will be called Balgray. It is near Balgray reservoir and located just off Balgraystone Road.

The name is an old Scottish place name meaning either Bal (settlement) or Balg (bulge or bag shaped body of water.)

  • Will there be an opportunity to comment on the plans for the station?

We will be holding regular public engagement events throughout the development of the station, particularly for those living closest to the proposed station site, as well as working with local schools and community groups.

The web page on Scotland’s Railway project hub will be kept updated on all the latest developments, as well as information provided on social media and in local press.

  • Will all trains call at the station? How many trains a day will there be?

The timetables for the line of route will not be confirmed until later, but it is likely that most trains between Glasgow and Neilston will call at the station.

There are currently 36 trains a day between Glasgow and Neilston, each way.

  • Will the station have lifts?

The design of the station is still being finalised, but there will be a footbridge with lifts to provide level access between the platforms.

  • Will the work be noisy?

There will be some noise, yes. There will be both day and night shifts, including weekend working, and given the nature of the machinery/plant in use, there will be some noise and disruption during construction.

However, we will do whatever we can to mitigate noise from plant and machinery and will locate plant at the furthest safe point from adjacent housing wherever possible to deliver the work. Our contractors are experienced in delivering this type of work and are briefed daily to remind them of their responsibilities while working in communities, particularly at night.

  • How many car parking spaces will there be?

The design of the station is still being finalised, but the plans at this stage provide 80 car parking spaces, including disabled parking spaces and charging points for electric vehicles. Station users will be encouraged to use sustainable transport (buses/taxis) and active travel as much as possible.
