Shields Road

Renewal of Shields Road bridge from August 2023 until August 2024

Faqs

We understand that you will have many questions about the work we are doing and we have tried to answer those questions below.

If the answer to your query is not below, please use our contact form to share your question with the project team and they will come back to you.

  • Why is this project being delivered?

This project will replace the road bridge that carries Shields Road over the railway lines that run between Glasgow Central and Ayr, Largs, Wemyss Bay and Gourock.

It's part of a wider, rolling programme of maintenance and renewals aimed at keeping the network safe and reliable.

When complete, the works carried out will mean the bridge is stronger and can handle the volumes of traffic that travel over it without any need for weight restrictions on the road, which have been in place for over twenty years.

  • What will change?

When complete, the work will improve the road layout for vehicles passing over Shields Road, reintroducing 3 lanes as well as a cycle lane over the carriageway removing current restrictions.

  • Who is funding the work?

This work is jointly funded by Glasgow City Council and Network Rail

  • When are the works starting?

Work is planned to start in August 2023.

  • Will there be any disruption to services?

Shields Road will be closed to all vehicles between St Andrew’s Drive and Scotland Street (except for access to the retail unit currently for sale/let on Shields Road). Diversionary routes will be in place and will be fully signposted.

There will be a pedestrian footbridge always maintaining access on foot adjacent to main bridge. Cyclists will be asked to dismount over the temporary footbridge.

  • How long will the works be?

The work is planned to take just over a year, and the road will reopen in August 2024.

  • Why is it taking so long?

Utilities underneath the road surface need to be diverted before the current bridge deck can be demolished. They will then need to be reinstated over the new bridge. This will take several months to complete safely.

  • Will construction work be noisy?

Unfortunately, given the nature of the work, some noise is unavoidable during the construction phase. We will do what we can to minimise disturbance for station users and the surrounding community.

  • Where will the compound be located?

The compound will be at the north of the structure within the road closure. We will also have a material laydown at the south of the structure, within the road closure.
