Sunnyside Road Bridge Restriction
Sunnyside Road bridge weight restriction from 8 April 2024
We’re working with North Lanarkshire Council to put a 7.5-tonne vehicle weight restriction on Sunnyside Road bridge (OB 240/069) to the east of Coatbridge Sunnyside station.
Due to the bridge's deteriorating condition, a five-mile diversion route will be in place for all vehicles that exceed this weight.
The Council’s suggested diversion route via Glenmavis for vehicles that exceed the weight limit will maintain the 'B' classification of the road.
The bridge is safe and the weight restriction is to help limit further deterioration while ensuring it can remain open to most vehicles.
Why?
Known locally as ‘Red Bridge’, Network Rail asked that North Lanarkshire Council place a 7.5-tonne weight restriction on the bridge over the railway at Sunnyside Road, which will affect larger vehicles.
What will change?
Network Rail and North Lanarkshire Council are working on a proposal to rebuild the bridge, which is currently planned for 2026/27 and the weight restrictions will remain in place until then.
