Faqs

We understand that you may have questions about the weight restriction and we have tried to answer them below.

If the answer to your query is not below, please use our contact form to share your questions with the project team and they will come back to you.

  • Why is a weight restriction being introduced?

The proposed weight restriction is due to the deteriorating condition of the bridge, which was found during a routine inspection.

A weight restriction will help to limit further deterioration and ensure it can remain open to most vehicles.

The restriction applies to vehicles exceeding a gross vehicle weight (loaded weight) of 7.5 tonnes.

Network Rail has carried out recent remedial repairs to keep the bridge open with this weight restriction and to allow time for bridge users to be notified before the restriction is in place.

  • Is the bridge safe?

The bridge is completely safe. The weight restriction will help to limit further deterioration of the bridge while ensuring it can remain open to most vehicles.

Network Rail will carry out enhanced monitoring of the bridge every 28 days to keep an eye on its condition.

  • When will the weight restriction be lifted?

Network Rail is working with the council on a long-term plan to replace the bridge, planned for 2026/27.

This complex project will involve significant planning, design and investment and further information will be provided as the project progresses.

  • Why is the diversion so long?

The diversion needs to be suitable for vehicles above 7.5 tonnes and this is the shortest available route.

  • Will local bus services be affected?

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) will be informed of the weight restriction to allow them to consider the impact on bus services in the area. Passengers will be informed of any changes to services before the restriction comes into effect on 8 April.

  • Are school buses affected?

Pupils will be collected and dropped off as normal. The buses will use the diversion route to and from schools.

  • Will my bin collection be affected?

No disruption to bin collections is anticipated at this time. This will be confirmed and updated following feedback from stakeholders.

  • Will the road still be gritted?

Yes, gritting will continue in accordance with the council’s winter service policy and procedures. Appropriate plant and equipment will be used to grit the bridge

  • Have you informed residents and businesses about this restriction?

Network Rail has published information on its web site and will send a letter to businesses in the surrounding area, providing information on the weight restriction and diversion.

The council will publish a public notice in the local newspaper. In advance of the weight restriction taking effect on 08 April, information will be published on the council’s social media channels and signs will be placed on roads around the bridge.

  • Will my business be compensated for the issues caused by the restriction?

No. There is no provision within the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 for individuals or businesses to be compensated for any losses arising from disruption to the road network.

  • What if there’s an emergency – will police, fire and ambulance vehicles be able to use the bridge?

Emergency vehicles over 7.5 tonne will use an alternative route.
