Faqs

We understand that you may have some questions about the work we are doing and we have tried to answer those questions below.

If the answer to your query is not below, please use our contact form to share your question with the project team and they will come back to you.

  • Why is this project being delivered?

Our works are part of Network Rail’s standard maintenance programme and will help futureproof the landmark viaduct.

  • What will change?

After the work is complete, the historic structure will look the same as before.

To ensure as little disruption as possible to passengers and visitors, specially trained teams will use ropes to carry out the works. The viaduct will not be encapsulated so there will be very little change to its appearance, and there will be no disruption to rail services because of this project.

  • Who is funding the project?

This work is £3.4m investment from the Scottish Government.

  • When are the works starting?

It is currently planned for the work to start in April. Our teams will arrive on site a few weeks in advance to begin setting up.

  • How long will the work take?

It is expected the work will take around 50 weeks to complete. However, our teams may need to stand down during periods of adverse weather due to the nature of the repairs and to make sure our colleagues are always working in safe conditions.

  • Will there be a disruption to services?

No. Services will continue to run as normal throughout the works.

  • Will any station amenities be affected?

The station amenities will continue to operate as normal throughout the works.

  • How will the work be carried out?

To ensure as little disruption as possible to passengers and visitors, specially trained teams will use ropes and cradles to carry out the work. To ensure efficiency, our teams will work on 3 spans at once.

  • Will any of the access points to the station be closed?

Access points to the station on both sides will remain open as normal.

  • Will construction work be noisy?

Unfortunately, given the nature of the work, some noise is unavoidable during the construction phase. We will do what we can to minimise disturbance for station users and the surrounding community.

  • Where will the compound be located?

The compound will be located within the grounds of Glenfinnan Estate.

  • Will there be any road closures during the works?

    No.

  • Will parking be impacted?

Our works will have no impact on local parking, our site teams will park within our agreed compound location.

  • Has the design been agreed?

Network Rail has worked with the Highland Council and all works have been granted consent. Listed Building Consent was granted where required under application number 22/00251/LBC.

  • How can I make an enquiry?
